Watch The Alienist

"The Alienist" is an upcoming event series based on the book of the same title by Caleb Carr, who will be one of the producers. It will be a murder mystery set in New York City in the 1890s. The title is an old word for psychiatrist or psychologist and refers to the belief that insane people were alienated from both society and their own true nature. It also refers to the character Dr. Laszlo Kreizler who is recruited by the police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt to help investigate a series of gruesome killings, which turn out to be the work of one of the city's first serial killers. The two men put together a disparate and eccentric team, including the crime reporter John Moore, to help them in their efforts. In the book, there was also a female police officer and a pair of Jewish brothers on the team. The book also made a point of demonstrating how police investigations were beginning to use new disciplines such as psychology and finger printing -- and how some people and organizations resisted the new methods. "The Alienist" is expected to run for eight episodes.
